How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.
